  • Only Cross Slot faithfully follows ground surface undulations at the same time as it self-adjusts to variations in soil density. Seed slots made by Cross Slot openers are so favourable to seeds that they will even force germination of poor quality seeds, which are otherwise incapable of developing into high-yielding crops.

High quality seeds are therefore recommended. Cross Slot openers can successfully handle most seed types from small clover, brassicas, grasses to medium cereals, soybean, sorghum to large Garbonzo beans, corn, peas. The more residues that are retained on the soil surface the greater will be the moisture conserved by no-tillage.

This demands openers with superior residue-handling properties where Cross Slot has no equal. Stubble retention traps snow during the winter that insulates the soil from extremely low temperatures. But stubble is often sacrificed to accommodate poor residue handling by openers. Cross Slot maximises stubble retension.

Growing cover crops achieves many of the good things that residue retention achieves between crops. Cross Slot handles cover crops with ease and preserves the ground cover and soil biology they nourish. Few things are more important than separately banding fertilizer at seeding so long as this can be achieved without damaging the seed.

All Cross Slot drills undertake this function as a standard requirement. Residues that are allowed to rot on the soil surface are incorporated into the soil by soil fauna as soil organic matter SOM. SOM is the feed-stuff of millions of beneficial soil microbes that build soil sot. Good soil structure positively influences crop yield and halts soil erosion, but is destroyed by all forms of tillage.

Tillage discharges large quantities of CO 2 into the atmosphere through aeration. No-tillage greatly reduces this.

    Cross Slot: FAQS

The less the disturbance the less the CO 2 discharge. Cross Slot openers achieve the least disturbance of all. Only now are soil biologists realising that tillage has been distorting the soil biological eco-system for centuries and that new levels of crop yield may be attainable under continuous low-disturbance no-tillage.

The soil disturbed by the wheels slippage also mineralizes nitrogen rcoss gives a short term boost to those seeds that emerge from the openers that passed through the wheel slip area.

But the same responses do not necessarily occur when using any form of no-tillageincluding LDNT. In tilled soils, such preferential- flow channels are destroyed by the tillage process and the nutrients then disperse more or less evenly down through the soil profile and feed all roots on the way.

For both reasons, no-tilled seedlings respond much more readily to fertilizers that are banded alongside the seed by the seeding openers than in tilled soils. But not all no-tillage openers can band fertilizer at the same time as they sow seeds.

Cross Slot: A Unique Seed Environment

Most pure disc-type openers, for example cannot do this. In the main, no! It is very unwise to assume that what works in tillage will also work in no-tillage. Deep banding in tilled soils involves separation distances between seed and fertilizer of mm 2 — 3 inches. But in no-tillage, separation distances should be no greater than 25 mm 1 inch but may be horizontal, vertical or diagonal.

Most farms have several different soil types and the way that each of these soil types behaves may vary from day to day with rain etc. No-one can afford to have several machines on hand to suit the different conditions.

Cross Slot LDNT minimises soil disturbance. All soil disturbance (no matter how small) oxidises the labile (free) carbon in the soil organic matter (SOM) into CO 2 that is lost to the atmosphere. Up to 20% of existing atmospheric CO 2 has come from farmers ploughing the world’s arable soils to feed itself. Already the world has lost 75% of the SOM from its arable soils in this manner, which is serious . Only Cross Slot openers make inverted T-shaped slots. Cross Slot’s ability to micro-manage surface residues is why germination failures are very rare indeed. Compaction/smearing. Almost all no-tillage openers smear the slot walls in damp soils. Some also compact them. When smears dry they become crusts that restrict root growth. Cross Slot openers do not compact or allow smears to dry. Hairpinning. “Cross Slot arose to eliminate the failures that often occur when farmers attempt to use no-tillage in dry climates,” says John Baker, CEO of Baker No-Tillage Ltd., in New Zealand. “Its main claim to fame in this regard is that the opener harnesses the water vapour that all soils contain, even when they are very dry.”.

Therefore one of the most important features of any no-tillage machine is to be adaptable to a wide cojpany of conditions with minimum adjustment required when going from one condition to another. Do the terms no-tillage, direct drilling, strip-tillage and minimum-tillage all mean the same thing?

These are: a Shank-type tined openers, which maximise seed-to-soil contact by disturbing a lot of soil in the slot.

Typically, shank-type openers are used to undertake strip tillage. How do the different openers and what they do affect soil carbon exchanges? The openers micro-manage the way the slot is formed and covered. True LDNT is invariably carbon-positive. Minimum tillage is usually carbon negative.

Conventional tillage is always strongly carbon negative. Does LDNT affect the risks associated with no-tillage? Is LDNT compatible with straw burning? The more residues the better. Is organic farming compatible with LDNT?

    cross slot company in trouble

Yes and no. Is it true that tilled soils absorb more water when it rains? Do the large tractors and machines used in no-tillage compact the ground? Is it true that untilled soils are slower to warm in the spring, and if so what are the implications?

Cross Slot’s ability to seed through very heavy residue allows farmers to leave all residues on the surface which traps moisture for the crop and increases soil organic matter levels, creating a win-win for the farmer and conservationists. Are crop root systems restricted in untilled ground? Are there any crops that cannot be no-tilled? Is it necessary to increase seeding rates with any form of no-tillage? With inferior no-tillage machines, often yes. How does LDNT interact with soil microbes?

Cross Slot: CROSS SLOT® IS REGENEREATIVE AGRICULTURE

Is there anything special about how fertilizer is applied during no-tillage? On several fronts.

    cross slot company in trouble

The reasons are: a If weeds have been killed prior to seeding, there will be competition for nitrogen between the decomposition microbes and the newly emerging seedlings, and b Soluble nutrients may flow preferentially from the surface of the soil down undisturbed earthworm or old root channels in untilled soils and thereby bi- pass many of the newly sown root systems.

But in no-tillage, separation distances should be no greater than 25 mm 1 inch but may be horizontal, vertical or diagonal Low Disturbance above the ground reduces weed growth requiring less spraying and potential run-off of chemicals into streams. Residues become food for earthworms and soil microbes when recycled back into the soil called "sequestration".

Sequestered residues help build soil organic matter and soil organic carbon. Reduces Input Costs — less Fertilizer and Seed required. Seed rate is reduced by high germination and emergence rates.

Capital costs are similar to tillage — operating costs are much less. Machinery replacement and maintenance are less frequent. Cross Slot is designed and built for a 10, hour service life. Excellent emergence and establishment. Below ground banded fertilizer increases efficiency of uptake.

Only untilled soils contain usable amounts of vapour water in addition to liquid water. Only inverted T-shaped seed slots trap this humidity for use by seeds. Only Cross Slot openers make inverted T-shaped slots.

Sustainable agriculture is farming in sustainable ways, which means meeting society's food and textile present needs, without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Regenerative agriculture is a conservation and rehabilitation approach to food and farming systems. It focuses on topsoil regeneration, increasing biodiversity, improving the water cycle, enhancing ecosystem services, supporting biosequestration, increasing resilience to climate change, and strengthening the health and vitality of farm soil.

The first thing Andy and Rob Law had to do before they bought a Cross Slot drill was convince their late father the figures justified the investment. That was and now, after that purchase, their farms are in great shape and the figures are looking even better. Land sustainability was Andy Russell's original motivation for direct drilling.

No-tillage and direct drilling are essentially the same thing by two different names we will use the term no-tillage in this document. Both are characterised by the fact that the soil has not undergone any form of tillage or cultivation before seeding and weeds have been killed or suppressed by non-disturbance means such as herbicide application, natural mortality or knife-rolling otherwise known as crimping. Strip tillage involves tilling relatively narrow strips of soil that the seeds are sown into while leaving wider strips untilled between the rows.
